The IMA-Europe 20th Anniversary Conference was held in Brussels on 24 September 2014. It was dedicated to the future of industrial minerals, with presentations on the future of industry by Philippe Destatte, historian and futurist, and on the future of the industrial minerals sector. Speakers from the industry illustrated the sector's ambitions on specific issues: health and safety at the workplace, and innovation. Mattia Pellegrini, Head of Cabinet of the European Commission ad interim for Industry and Enterprise), Daniel J. Reuss (CEO Omya Region Europe & IMA-Europe President), Torkel Rhenman (CEO Lhoist Group), Sven H. Schultheis (Group Vice-President Business Unit Functional Materials, Clariant), Danny Croon (Environment Director EUROFER), debated on the future of the industrial minerals extraction in Europe. Mattia Pellegrini closed the conference with a key note speech, which was followed by the IMA-Europe Safety Awards Ceremony.

John van Put presented several examples how Sibelco is working to reduce its footprint, by actively seeking innovative ways to increase recycling rates, improving energy usage, reducing its GHG emissions and its water usage. He explained that industrial minerals have an essential role in supporting and realizing innovations, towards a sustainable way of living in 2050.
